Workshop on Navigating Environmental Stewardship

Workshop on Navigating Environmental Stewardship

Ms. Adeeba Anjum  & Ms. Anna Alexander, teachers from MHS attended the Workshop on Environmental Stewardship held on 17th June, 2023 at Ek Tara Community Centre, Topsia.

Dr Verity Jones, Professor at University of West England, Bristol, from the UK had joined the workshop live through GMeet. She shared experiences of her work with students in the UK and did a number of interesting activities with us. It was an alarming realization that the entire world is facing environmental threats and sustainability has to be aimed for at a war footing.

Ms Nobina Gupta, the Director of Disappearing Dialogues Collective, started the session with us introducing ourselves but with a little pinch of fun and association with animals. She told us to say our names by replacing our titles with the name of an animal, as the agenda was to make us sensitive towards nature. When we associate a name with us, it kind of becomes personal and then we care for it more seriously. Ms Gupta also made us do a few activities and a quiz. The quiz was based on our knowledge about our State Bird, State Tree, State Animal, State Food etc. It was very eye-opening.

The workshop ended with a feedback session.

Disappearing Dialogues Collective is working closely with East Kolkata Wetland Schools. Ms Gupta made us aware of the natural sewage treatment system of Kolkata and hence the importance of the wetlands. They encouraged us to boost the wetlands economy (example-by buying fishes locally), so as to stop landfilling of this region.
