Jolabhumi Utsav 2023
On February 2nd, 2023 in observance of World Wetlands Day, nine Class 11 students of Modern High School for Girls participated in 'Jolabhumi Utsav'23' which was organised by Disappearing Dialogues. For the event, they visited two separate schools in the East Kolkata Wetlands(EKW) . They initially visited Bamanghata High School, where they attended a lecture on the significance of the wetlands to Kolkata. Then, the students of the EKW schools led them on a short interactive tour of the wetlands, where they learned about the flora and fauna that inhabit the East Kolkata Wetlands. They proceeded next to Kheadaha High School, where they participated in activities such as scroll painting, photography, and impromptu performances based on the subject.
This event showed us how Kolkata and the East Kolkata Wetlands are interdependent on each other for the maintenance of the ecological balance and how important it is to preserve them for our future generations. It also allowed the students of MHS the opportunity to interact with students of two high schools in the area which were very different to their own. It was an enriching experience to see how well-informed the local students were about the plant and animal life of their immediate environment.
