BITM Math Workshop - Class 11 (ISC) & IBDP 1

On the 18th of August, the Math Students of Grade 11 from the ISC and IBDP1 batches of Modern High School were taken for a visit to the Birla Industrial and Technological Museum for a Math Workshop intended towards making mathematics more fun and refreshing.

The meeting was largely focused on Pythagoras’ Theorem and trigonometric identities and functions. The responses from a pre-workshop survey shared by BITM were the basis of the session, aimed at exploring and resolving common [mis]conceptions that are held towards mathematics. To engrave the understanding of Pythagoras’ Theorem, we were made to construct an origami paper boat, unfolding which would reveal multiple right-triangles along the creases. Then we were challenged with trisecting an angle with just paper. Following this was yet again another collaborative activity of generating the shape of an ellipse to obtain different patterns from the unique creases that were folded. Culminating the event was an animated game for tracing the graphs of different types of equations.

The workshop truly proved its motive of changing the outlook that most of us hold towards mathematics. Through the use of a creative approach, the session was successfully able to grasp the interest of students in mathematics.
