Alipore Central Jail Museum Visit, 2023
On 1st December, 2023, the History students of Class 11 of Modern High School for Girls had the privilege of visiting the Alipore Central Jail Museum. The Central Jail, which was converted into a museum only last year, is infamous for having housed Indian political prisoners and freedom fighters during the British Raj. The students observed the gallows and the various cells that had once held many freedom fighters, including the likes of Netaji, Sri Aurobindo and Kanailal Dutta. Today, many of these cells are used for informative exhibitions and even light-shows, which they were fortunate enough to watch. In addition to this, they came across multiple cells displaying the weapons and fragments of bullets and bombs that had been used by Indian revolutionaries in major raids and assassination attempts. All in all, the trip was a great success. It was an extremely enriching experience that offered the students a much deeper insight into one of the most important periods of Indian history and the invaluable sacrifices which had been made for us to win our independence from colonial rule.
