Ms. Suchorita Dawn, Upper Primary Department teacher– passed away on 21st December 2025
We remember with affection and gratitude Mrs Suchorita Dawn, an integral member of the Upper Primary Department at Modern High School for Girls. With a natural flair for English, she brought clarity, creativity and joy into her classroom, inspiring young minds through her love for teaching. Beyond academics, she was the quiet backbone of our school concerts and numerous interschool events
Her warmth, positivity and endearing nature drew students and colleagues alike, making her not only a teacher but also a trusted friend and guide to many.
Shreyashee Mukherjee, a Class 11 student of Modern High School for Girls represented India and was a part of the contingent from the Underwater Sports Association, India (USAI) who participated in the Asian Finswimming Championship, 2025 that took place in Zhanjiang, China from 24th to 29th November, 2025. This event brought together the top finswimmers from across the continent for one of Asia’s most competitive aquatic events.
Students of Modern High School for Girls attended the Cake Mixing Ceremony at the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM), Taratala on 5th December, 2025 and joined in the festive spirit followed by the felicitation of the Principal, Mrs. Damayanti Mukherjee.
Modern High School for Girls celebrated Children’s Day on 14th November, 2025 with students of Classes 6 -12 joining in the fun.
Students of Classes 8 and 9 as well as a few Clubs organised a Mini Fete full of delicious food, music, amazing games and stalls where handcrafted goods and delicacies were on sale. The teachers joined in the celebration through several performances on stage making it a memorable event for one and all.
The partnership between Modern High School and Gesamtschule Ückendorf has strengthened over the years and continues to foster valuable cultural and academic exchange. The 10th Exchange Programme (Austausch Program) began on the 30th of December, when the German partners were received at the airport. The programmes started the next day with introductions in class, allowing students to interact and learn together. A formal meeting and welcome ceremony was held at MHSI, attended by Mrs. Kar (Director, MHS), Mrs. Damayanti Mukherjee (Principal, MHSG), and Mrs. Nandini Ghatak (Principal, MHSI) and the German Faculty members of both the schools, where all participants were introduced and the guests received welcome gifts. The group then explored the MHSI campus, followed by a visit to MHSG, where the German partners enjoyed the gardens and Sports Day rehearsals. Lunch in the garden provided an informal setting for bonding, after which the students played basketball and enjoyed ice cream. The highlight of the day was a tie-dye workshop conducted by Ms. Sunanda Saraogi, where participants learned different techniques and created their own designs. The day ended with group photographs proudly displaying the finished tie-dye pieces. Overall, it was a meaningful and enjoyable day that deepened the partnership and created lasting memories for everyone involved.

Day 2
Day 2 began with their first class of the day, which was made even more engaging by the presence of their German partners. This was followed by a lively bus ride filled with laughter, singing, and even a little dancing. The breathtaking view of the Howrah Bridge made the journey especially memorable.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the 275-year-old Kolkata Botanical Gardens. The group admired the delicate Orchid House and the impressive giant pads of the Victoria amazonica before finally reaching the star attraction: the Great Banyan Tree.
Sprawling like an entire forest, the tree left everyone in awe. As they ventured deeper, however, some were mildly—if a bit dramatically—heartbroken to learn that the tree’s original main trunk had succumbed to a fungal infection and had been removed in 1925. Still, the legendary “Walking Tree” continues to grow and inspire.
The day concluded with local snacks at the garden cafeteria, after which they returned to school on a quieter bus, gently lulled into contentment by a day rich with discovery.
Day 3
We welcomed the Christmas month with great excitement as our school hosted special guests from Germany—10 enthusiastic students and 4 wonderful teachers. With festive cheer in the air and curiosity all around, the Austausch programme began as a joyful meeting of cultures, friendships, and shared experiences. From the very first day, laughter, learning, and meaningful connections set the tone for an unforgettable exchange.
The programme began with a refreshing yoga session that helped us relax, energise ourselves, and connect with one another right from the start. It was a calm yet joyful way to ease into the days ahead and build a sense of togetherness among participants.
Working closely with our Austausch partners during the cooking activity was a highlight of the programme. Each pair creatively used a secret ingredient unique to Kolkata, and sharing the meals we prepared created a warm, homely atmosphere that strengthened friendships and encouraged teamwork. Our visit to the planetarium was equally fascinating, as we explored the wonders of the universe through interactive skywatch sessions.
Sustainability lay at the heart of the Austausch programme. Through engaging icebreakers, workshops, and German-language lessons, we learned what it truly means to live a nachhaltig lifestyle. Hands-on activities such as composting, waste segregation, and upcycling helped us turn ideas into action and reflect on how small, mindful choices can make a big difference.
Cultural exploration was another memorable aspect of the programme. A tram ride across Kolkata allowed us to observe historical landmarks and experience the city’s unique heritage. The exchange concluded at the Goethe-Institut with exciting collaborative activities such as poster-making, scavenger hunts, and designing a sustainable school campus.
Overall, the Austausch programme was an enriching and eye-opening experience that helped us grow as individuals while deepening our appreciation for cultural exchange, teamwork, and environmental responsibility..

The All-Girls Inter School Athletic Meet was held on 24th November, 2025 at the CCFC grounds, celebrating the power and passion of girls in sports. Mrs. Devi Kar, Director of Modern High School for Girls, declared the meet open, while Mrs. Damayanti Mukherjee, Principal of Modern High School for Girls, and Mr. Irfan Ahmed, Vice-President of CCFC, warmly welcomed all participants with engaging speeches. Eight schools came together for a day that highlighted determination, teamwork and the inspiring spirit of young female athletes. La Martiniere for Girls emerged as the Champion School while Modern High School for Girls secured the Runner- up position.
The Annual Sports of Modern High School for Girls was held on 23rd November, 2025. This year, the Chief Guest was Mrs. Prochy N. Mehta, a sporting legend and proud alumna of the school. A former state athlete, she has represented West Bengal in basketball and hockey, and India in Masters Athletics — winning an extraordinary 71 international medals and holding Asian records in the 400 metres and triple jump.
She was accompanied by Mrs. Sanaya Mehta Vyas, also an alumna of MHS, a pioneering figure in women’s rugby in India, a key leader with Rugby India and the Vice President of Bengal Hockey. The event was further graced by the presence of Mrs. Birla, our Chairperson, Mr. Ratan Postwalla, Mr. Batlivala, Ms. Godhuli Banerjee, and the parents of the Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl. Their presence added to the sense of pride and celebration that defined the day.
The amazing display of athleticism and sporting spirit did leave one and all cheering for the participants, evoking healthy competition and boosting team work.
The Overall Best Athlete was Palak Roy of Class 7. The Individual Champion for Division C was Plak Roy, for Division B it was Trisha Chatterjee and the Division A Individual Champion was Mira Pooviah. The event was a colourful affair with the wonderful drill displays by the Middle schoolers, the foot tapping numbers by Footloose and the well synchronised display by the School Band.
Orchid House emerged as the Champion House, marking a memorable finish to a spirited and successful sports meet.
Career Guidance Session by IIAD (Indian Institute of Art & Design) was held on 18th November, 2025 for the Class 11 and 12 students of Modern High School for Girls. The Resource Person was Dr.Sunita Konwar, Course Leader and Professor of Fashion Business Management at IIAD. It was a highly engaging and interactive session which allowed the students to explore various career options and be enlightened about the expectations and criterion of pursuing a course.
The Mini Education Fair by IDP Education, Kolkata was organized in Modern High School for Girls on 20th November, 2025 where different colleges across USA, Canada, Ireland, Australia and UK visited to interact with the students of Classes 11 & 12. It provided direct access to representatives from many many organizations, allowing students to compare programs, ask detailed questions about admissions, scholarships, and campus life, and receive guidance on their academic and career paths.
