In July 2026, I went on a journey that I do not think I could ever forget. It was an incredible opportunity given to me by the Goethe-Institut and my teachers: a three-week summer camp in Germany. Naturally, the possibility of travelling to Germany excited me greatly. However, I could never have prepared myself for just how enjoyable the entire experience would be.

We stayed in Benediktbeuern, a small town in Bavaria. It was quaint, peaceful, and lined with picturesque houses. Every morning, we attended classes to improve our language skills. Being in Germany and communicating with locals in German gave me an immersive experience that I had never really found in Kolkata. Each lesson was part of a systematic and intensive programme designed to prepare us for the B2 examination.

I had quite a few amusing interactions with my friends because of German, but one in particular stands out. The word will, when used as a verb in German, expresses desire, meaning “to want”, unlike its more matter-of-fact meaning in English. Sometimes, my mind would slip, and I would use the word will while speaking English but with its German meaning in mind. Of course, my friends would make fun of me whenever I did this, but it also made me feel a strange sense of pride. After all, I had become comfortable enough with German for it to occasionally slip into my English without me even realising it.

Of course, the sense of accomplishment I felt upon receiving my B2 certificate was incomparable. Despite that, however, the highlight of my trip would have to be the new connections I made there. There were students from all across the world, fifteen countries, to be exact. Interacting with them gave me the opportunity to explore cultures that were very different from my own. I learned about the snacks they enjoyed in their countries, the holidays they celebrated, and even some of their unusual beliefs and superstitions. What began as a group of strangers from different corners of the world gradually became a group of friends who shared three unforgettable weeks together.

The last day felt like a fever dream. The three weeks had passed far too quickly, and the day became a festival of tears, sadness, and sleepiness, as everybody had been stubbornly determined to stay up all night before their flights. After spending so much time together, saying goodbye was much harder than any of us had expected. The friends we had made lived thousands of miles away, and there was always the possibility that it could be our last encounter.

Although the last day was truly heartbreaking, I would go on this scholarship again and again if I had the opportunity. It was a chance like no other: an experience that not only helped me improve my German, but also introduced me to people, cultures, and memories that I will carry with me for years to come. More than just a language camp, those three weeks gave me a glimpse of a world far beyond my own, and I am incredibly grateful that I had the opportunity to be a part of it.
