Note:

  • CISCE now offers two types  of Mathematics at ISC. Please read the instructions from CISCE carefully.

From the examination year 2027 onwards, ISC students will have two Mathematics options: Mathematics (860) and Applied Mathematics (885).

Mathematics (860) is intended for candidates aiming to pursue Pure Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering, Architecture, and related STEM fields. It focuses on theoretical foundations and frameworks essential for higher studies in science and mathematics.

Applied Mathematics (885) is designed for candidates interested in Humanities, Commerce, Finance, Business, and similar fields. It emphasizes the practical application of mathematical concepts to real-world contexts such as data interpretation, financial analysis, and problem-solving.

The Council has also clarified that with the introduction of Applied Mathematics, the Section C topics of Application of Calculus, Linear Regression, and Linear Programming have been removed from Mathematics (860). As a result, the question papers for Mathematics (860) and Applied Mathematics (885) will differ significantly in content, approach, topics, and weightage.

CISCE APPLIED MATHS IS DIFFERENT FROM CBSE APPLIED MATHS AND THERE SHOULD NOT BE ANY CONFUSION BETWEEN THE TWO.CISCE HAS SENT THE SYLLABUS TO UGC TO THAT EFFECT. This implies that NO Indian college can refuse acceptance of Applied Maths for admission in non-stem subjects eg B.Com, Eco(H).

  • We do not consider ICSE marks for ISC admission (internal or external candidates).
  • Students who did not take Science in Group 2 cannot opt for Physics, Chemistry or Biology at ISC—but EVS is open to all, even without ICSE background.

Guidance for Future Pathways  :

  • Law → Legal Studies, Political Science, History, Economics, Applied Maths  and EVS.

  2. Architecture  abroad requires Physics and Maths, but not Chemistry.
  3. NEET does not require Mathematics but it is good to have PCMB combination- gives possibility of Biotechnology as another option.
  4. CLAT requires Maths till class 10.
  5. New fields in AI and Environmental Studies are emerging—consider Geography + Maths/Physics combinations.
  6. Fashion Design: Fashion Design  as subject helps build a portfolio. Helps if you are aspiring for NIFT.  Applied Maths helpful.
  7. Environmental Studies: Growing field—EVS with Geography is a strong option.
