On 16th September, Team MHS began its 7th Austausch Program with 10 students from both MHSG and MHSI. They were accompanied by Mrs. Bina Ghosh and Ms. Priyanka Kali.  The team first visited Berlin, where they met their partners from Gesamtschule Ükendorf, Germany, and explored the city together.

The history of mining in the Ruhr area, particularly in Gelsenkirchen, began in the 19th century with the rapid industrialization of Germany. The city became a key center for coal production, contributing significantly to the country’s economic growth.  Over the decades, numerous coal mines were established, leading to a population boom and urban development. However, the industry faced a decline in the late 20th century, leading to mine closures and economic challenges. Today, Gelsenkirchen has transitioned towards post-industrial regeneration, focusing on services and technology while preserving its rich industrial heritage.

The group visited the Bezirksbürgermeisterin, Frau Marion Thielert (Vice Mayor of Gelsenkirchen )
